Halogen-free flame retardants for aluminum hydroxide have the following characteristics:
Environmentally friendly and halogen-free: Aluminum hydroxide is an inorganic compound, halogen-free and environmentally friendly, without causing secondary pollution. It has properties such as flame retardancy, smoke suppression, filling, and anti-static. No toxic or corrosive gases are produced during combustion, meeting environmental protection requirements.
The flame retardant mechanisms are diverse:
Heat absorption effect: When heated to around 220 degrees, it absorbs heat and decomposes, releasing crystalline water and absorbing a large amount of heat, which can effectively inhibit the temperature rise and thermal degradation of polymers.
Covering effect: The aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) generated by decomposition forms a protective film on the surface of combustible materials, preventing them from continuing to burn and isolating air to prevent the spread of flames.
Dilution effect: The water vapor produced by decomposition dilutes the concentration of flammable gases and oxygen, thereby preventing the spread of flames.
Carbonization effect: Under combustion conditions, aluminum hydroxide flame retardants produce highly dehydrating substances, which promote the carbonization of plastics without easily generating flammable volatile substances, thereby preventing the spread of flames.
Significant cost advantage: It is cheaper than halogen, phosphorus and other systems, has a wide range of sources, and enjoys a significant cost advantage.
Performance improvement
Good compatibility with polymer materials: After advanced surface treatment processes, it has good compatibility with polymer materials. When added in large quantities, it can greatly reduce the impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the materials.
Improving product performance: Adding a high filling amount of aluminium hydroxide to flammable polyolefin plastic products such as polyethylene and polypropylene not only achieves flame retardancy but also enables the high-filling polyolefin to be more easily processed through mold casting after a composite reaction, thereby enhancing the tensile strength and impact resistance of the products.
Versatility: It has three major functions: flame retardancy, smoke suppression and filling. It causes no secondary pollution during combustion, does not produce toxic or corrosive gases during pyrolysis, absorbs heat and releases water vapor, and has flame-retardant and self-extinguishing properties. It not only has good dispersibility in polyolefins, but also is easy to produce flame-retardant synergistic effects with other additives. In addition, due to the presence of crystalline water, it can endow polymer products with anti-static functions, and at the same time improve and enhance the strength and toughness and other properties of high molecular polymers.
