The acid source in intumescent flame retardants plays a key role in the flame retardant process, and its main functions are reflected in the following aspects:
First, promote the formation of carbon layers
When heated, the acid source decomposes to produce acidic substances. These acidic substances can undergo esterification reactions with the carbon source, promoting the dehydration and carbonization of the carbon source, thereby forming a dense carbonaceous foam layer on the material surface. This layer of carbon is the basis for the flame-retardant effect of the intumescent flame retardant. It can effectively block the transfer of heat and oxygen and prevent the spread of the flame.
Second, catalytic esterification reaction
During the esterification reaction process, the acid source not only provides the acidic environment required for the reaction but also acts as a catalyst, accelerating the esterification reaction rate between the carbon source and compounds such as polyols. This helps to form a sufficient carbon layer in a shorter time and improve the flame retardant efficiency.
Third, the synergistic effect of the gas source
The acid source and the gas source work in coordination with each other in the intumescent flame retardant system. When the gas source is heated and decomposed, it releases a large amount of non-toxic and non-flammable gas. These gases fill the carbon layer, causing it to expand and foam, forming a porous structure. The presence of the acid source promotes the formation and stability of the carbon layer, providing effective support and fixation for the gas produced by the gas source, thereby enhancing the heat insulation and oxygen isolation effects of the carbon layer.
Fourth, enhance flame retardant performance
By promoting the formation of the carbon layer, catalyzing the esterification reaction and acting in synergy with the gas source, the acid source significantly improved the flame retardant performance of the intumescent flame retardant. When a fire breaks out, the acid source can respond quickly, promoting the formation of a solid carbon layer on the material surface, effectively preventing the spread of flames and the transfer of heat, and buying precious time for personnel evacuation and fire fighting.
